Around Thursday of last week, I caught a cold, and though it was generally a lazy long weekend, my inertness reached its peak Saturday, when I spent the entire day in bed watching Parks and Recreation: Season Two on Netflix Instant Streaming.

Illness (and laziness) prevented me from getting this done sooner, but here it is, the recap of Castle 3×20 – “Slice of Death,” wherein Castle and Beckett investigate a corpse discovered in a pizza oven, and stumble into NY’s pizza wars.

When I was sixteen, my parents and I set off on a road trip up the coast of California to look at a few potential college campuses. Before heading out, however, we stopped at Barnes & Noble at the Grove so I could blow a gift card on a bunch of new books. (Reading in the car is a skill that I have sadly lost to time, and not just because now I’m usually the one driving.)

This week’s Castle took the titular novelist and his muse into the seedy world of jury selection. Just kidding. But there was plenty of law, and very little order.

In this week’s Castle, Nathan Fillion returned to his roots with a murder on the set of a daytime soap opera. Not being a soap fan myself, some of the inside jokes were no doubt lost on me, and I kept wondering why guest star Corbin Bernsen didn’t just put in a call to Shawn and Gus. At least while the mystery was – yet again – predictable, the characters were back to their usual playful selves, and more moments of connection between Beckett and Castle were had.

In 2008, ABC Family cancelled the geek-fueled funfest that was The Middleman after only 12 episodes, and the name Javier Grillo-Marxuach hasn’t been seen on TV since (excluding reruns of Charmed on TNT). I recently got the chance to catch up with Javi (as he’s known to practically everyone), and find out what projects are in the works, whether he’ll ever continue The Middleman in comic form, and what it’s like to be both a professional and “a dyed-in-the-wool fan.”

In addition to their fall pilot screenings and special events year round, the Paley Center also hosts the annual Paley Festival, and Tuesday night I went to the Saban Theatre on Wilshire for their panel on Community.
Which shows Paley features during PaleyFest changes every year, but Community was invited back for the second year in a row – whether or not it has the ratings numbers, there’s no denying the show has the fans.

Monday’s Castle succeeded where it usually succeeds (characters and dialogue), and failed where it often fails (plot). While many fans are up in arms about the apparent derailment of the Castle/Beckett romance, I just wish there had been a single surprise in episode 3×17 “Countdown.” I realize there are only so many places to go [...]
This Monday’s Castle was the first in a gripping two-parter, an hour of the show at its best with tension, quips, romance, and thrilling heroics. And, of course, a corpse.
